Justice D.Y. Chandrachud: A progressive vision for Judicial Reforms in India

Author(s): Nidhi J Tiwari and Sunil Asopa

Abstract: Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s tenure as the 50th Chief Justice of India represents a defining phase in the evolution of Indian constitutional jurisprudence. His judicial philosophy, grounded in transformative constitutionalism and human rights, has reoriented the judiciary toward inclusivity, transparency, and technological modernization. Through landmark judgments on privacy, gender equality, and LGBTQIA+ rights, he reaffirmed the primacy of constitutional morality over majoritarian impulses. As Chief Justice, his initiatives in digitization, virtual hearings, and live-streaming enhanced judicial accessibility and institutional accountability. Despite ideological contestations, his jurisprudence embodies a progressive synthesis of law, morality, and technology. Justice Chandrachud’s legacy thus lies in bridging classical constitutional interpretation with contemporary societal imperatives, shaping a forward-looking and humane vision for judicial reform in India.
