Author(s): Janani N and Remya Mariam Raju

Abstract: Patrolling means going through or around a certain region to keep an eye on, observe, or protect it. This is frequently carried out to protect public safety, enforce the law, deter crime, or get information. Security guards, law enforcement, military forces. Depending on the conditions and goal, it can be done on foot, in a car, on a bicycle, or in another way. The deterrent effects of visible police patrols on crime rates and public confidence are examined in this study. It has long been believed that a visible police presence is essential to preventing crime and improving public safety. This study investigates whether more police presence in high-crime areas results in a discernible drop in criminal activity and a rise in public confidence in law enforcement. The study intends to evaluate the relationship between police visibility and shifts in criminal behaviour and community perceptions using a mixed- methods approach that includes crime rate analysis, public surveys, and law enforcement personnel interviews. According to the research, conspicuous police patrols can both increase public trust in the police and significantly reduce opportunistic crimes like theft and vandalism. However, a number of variables, including patrol frequency, community involvement, and public-police relations, affect how effective patrols are. According to the study's findings, visible patrols help lower crime and boost public confidence, but community policing and focused interventions are crucial for maintaining long-term gains in public safety and trust.
