Author(s): KG Siva Raja Sreethar and R Thilagaraj
Abstract: Protecting children from sexual abuse, exploitation, and harassment is the goal of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. This empirical study analyses how Chennai's youth crime rate is affected by the severity of punishments under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The association between the severity of punishment and the prevalence of child sexual abuse was investigated using a quantitative study of crime data. The findings suggest that stricter punishments under the POCSO Act are associated with significant reductions in child sexual abuse cases among youngsters in Chennai. The study's results provide valuable insights for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and child protection organizations in Chennai, highlighting the importance of robust punishment frameworks in preventing child sexual abuse.
