Forgotten voices: The plight of women prisoners in Punjab
Author(s): Harjeet Sharma
Abstract: This study critically examines the conditions of women prisoners in Punjab, India, within the framework of national laws and international human rights standards. The research highlights the challenges faced by female inmates, including inadequate living conditions, lack of healthcare, insufficient legal aid, and exposure to violence and neglect. Women prisoners in Punjab are particularly vulnerable due to overcrowded facilities, inadequate sanitation, and limited resources for maternal and child care. The study also evaluates government initiatives and legal reforms, such as the implementation of gender-sensitive prison practices and access to justice, while underscoring the need for further reforms. Recommendations include infrastructure improvement, enhanced healthcare and legal aid, psychological support, and rehabilitation programs to empower women and ensure their rights are upheld. By addressing systemic gender inequalities, the study seeks to foster a holistic approach to prison reform for women in Punjab.
